Wall insulation in Visalia CA - walls packed full without tearing them open

Drafty or hot rooms along your outside walls? We fill the hollow walls through small holes, then patch them clean.

Exposed wooden roof and wall framing densely filled with white spray foam insulation.

How do you insulate the walls of a house that's already built?

Wall insulation in Visalia for a finished house is usually done by drill and fill. We drill small holes near the top of each wall cavity, the hollow space between the studs, and blow insulation in until it's full, so your outside walls stop letting heat through and no drywall comes down.

Most calls start with a room that stays drafty or hot even after the attic was done, because the walls around it are often close to empty. The price depends on how much wall we're filling, whether we drill from inside or outside, the shape of your siding and the water barrier behind it, and the awkward spots, like bathroom tile on an outside wall that may have to come off first.

The schedule turns on whether your wiring is clear to work around, whether the city wants a permit, and whether you're planning new siding. Re-siding is the ideal time to insulate from outside, because the water barrier can be checked and rigid foam board can go on outside the studs along with the fill or in place of it. I write all of that into the estimate, step by step, with photos of what I found.

What happens after you call us about your walls?

I learned this trade insulating new houses while every wall was still open, and I started this business in Visalia in 2023 to do the harder work in houses people already live in. Here's how it goes from your first call.

I come out and look before any price

I come out myself, get up into the attic where the wall tops meet it, and take photos and notes on the wiring, any old insulation and what's stored against the walls. That way we know what's in there before we talk about cost.

A written estimate in the order we'll work

You get the estimate in writing, with each step listed in the order we'll do it and the photos I took. I go over them with you, so you can see why a wall is on the list or why I'd hold off on one.

Trained installers, checked against the estimate

Our trained installers do the work, and I check it against the estimate before we call it finished. We're licensed and insured, and satisfaction is guaranteed on every job.

How we plan and do wall insulation

The first thing we settle is whether the walls are safe to drill. In an older house I check the wiring and the age of the house before anyone drills, because lead safety rules can come into play when walls are disturbed in homes built before 1980, and the electrical code doesn't allow insulation around old knob and tube wiring. Then we pick inside or outside together, and I walk you through what each one means for your siding, your paint and the cleanup. Once that's decided, we drill near the top of each cavity, including the short ones over doors, above and below windows and behind cabinets on outside walls, and fill them one at a time.

A full wall still loses heat if air is pouring past it at the top plate, outlets and pipe holes, so we often pair this job with air sealing services. Walls below ground are a different job, since cellulose makers don't recommend it there or for filling block and brick wall cavities, and we handle those under basement insulation.

  • A check of the wiring and the house's age before any drilling
  • Inside or outside drilling, chosen with you before work starts
  • Floors covered and the work area closed off from the rest of the house
  • Every cavity on the estimate filled, including over doors, around windows and behind cabinets
  • Each hole plugged and patched, and the rooms cleaned before we leave

How the work goes on the day

Wall work happens in your living space or along your siding, so most of the care goes into keeping the house clean while the walls get filled.

  1. Clear and cover

We cover the floor under each wall and close off the work area when we blow from inside, because the dust from drilling travels fast if it isn't contained. If you can move furniture a few feet off the outside walls before we arrive, that saves time, and we'll handle anything you can't.

  2. Drill and fill

We drill the walls listed on the estimate and blow insulation in until each cavity is full. We work one wall at a time, so only part of a room is open at once.

  3. Plug and patch

Every hole gets plugged and patched before we move on. On outside work we seal the wall back up so the siding keeps shedding water.

  4. Clean up and walk through

We vacuum, take down the covers and walk the finished walls with you. That's your chance to look at the patches and ask about anything that doesn't look right.

Wall insulation questions we hear in Visalia

Can you insulate the walls in my Visalia house without tearing them open?

Yes, in most houses we fill closed walls through small holes without taking down any drywall. Inside, each hole gets a drywall or rigid foam plug and joint compound, then it's sanded and painted. Outside, the patch depends on whether siding came off.

Is it better to blow insulation into walls from inside or outside?

Inside is usually the simpler choice, because drilling from outside breaks through the water barrier behind your siding, such as house wrap, and that barrier then has to be patched or replaced. Outside makes sense when inside access is hard or the siding is coming off anyway. Access and the barrier's condition decide it, and that choice shapes the scope and the cost.

What's the best insulation for walls that are already closed up?

Dense-packed cellulose or fiberglass is the favored fill for closed walls in existing homes. Packing it dense keeps it from settling and fills the cavity all the way, so you get even insulation and less air moving through the wall.

How much does wall insulation cost in Visalia?

Across the US, installing blown-in wall insulation usually costs about $3.80 to $4.60 per square foot, and that's a national figure, not our price. Your Visalia price comes from the written estimate after I've seen your walls, priced on the things covered at the top of this page.

Permits and licenses for wall work in Visalia

In Visalia, Visalia Building Safety issues permits only to the property owner or a state licensed contractor, so if you hire the job out, the contractor needs a state license to pull one. Before work starts we check with the city or county office that covers your address, and when a permit is needed we apply for it and meet the inspector on site.

California's license for this trade is the C-2 classification, which covers installing any insulating material for heat or sound, so it's worth checking that whoever you hire is licensed with the state licensing board. We're based in Visalia and do the same wall work across the cities around it, from Kingsburg and Selma to Hanford, Lemoore and Woodlake. If your city isn't named on the site, call and ask.
